9/28/2023 0 Comments Make a dmg with dropdmg![]() Once you are convinced that the DMG file is working properly for you, remove your backup directories. ![]() Enter the wrong passphrase and the DMG is forcefully dismounted. The nice thing is if using a laptop and putting it to sleep, upon waking the laptop you'll be asked to enter your passphrase. The DMG can be stored on removeable media as well. Now you can only use your data if the DMG file is mounted. Go to your home directory and execute the following: If you enter the terminal and execute df, you should see the fileystem mounted as /Volumes/encrypted. An icon representing the filesystem should appear on your desktop. Mount the DMG file (we'll call it encrypted.dmg). Keep in mind, the important thing is to make a DMG file that is read/write if you make it read-only (or use compression on it), you will be unable to add new keys to your keychain, make modifications to your ssh known_hosts file, etc. You'll have to provide a passphrase to access the data when you mount it. This will tell DropDMG to create an image based on the contents of the encrypted folder. Now, open the Finder and drag the encrypted folder (from the Documents folder) onto the DropDMG application icon. Other than that, you can pretty much configure it however you like. The important things to note are in the Image Format section: Setting the type to Read-write and that it is Encrypted. The screenshot below shows the Preferences pane for DropDMG. $ cp -av ~/.ssh ~/Documents/encrypted/sshĪfter you've installed DropDMG, start up the application and go into the Preferences. $ cp -av ~/.gnupg ~/Documents/encrypted/gpg Typically, you will have ~/.gnupg and ~/.ssh directories to store the data for each respective application. We'll illustrate using DropDMG to create a DMG file that stores GPG and SSH data. DropDMG is shareware, and costs $10USD to register, although it can be used unregistered for evaluation. Obviously, DropDMG has many other uses as well, but it is well suited for this task. You now have your own drag drop window ready for distribution. The first tool we'll look at that can do this is DropDMG. Give it a new name and convert it to compressed format.Select the InstallerDMG.dmg from Desktop or wherever you had saved it.This will be the one that we will use for distribution. Now we will convert the disk image into a read only compressed disk image. This can act as a reference for future images you wish to create. Make a duplicate copy of the image file.Drag and arrange the icons in your mounted window to match the background.Feel free to customise the other settings as you wish. Restrict the mounted volume to icon view only.Copy the FireFox app into the mounted volume. In reality you would be distributing your own application. For the sake of this demo I will be choosing Mozilla FireFox. This can be any file or folder we wish to install. ![]() Here we are simply renaming the background folder with a ‘.’ before it. Switch to terminal and run the following command.
